Volunteer Connection: May brings variety of events

Welcome May.

It seems like the snow just finished melting and now we’ll start to see the beautiful colors of spring. This month is designated as Date Your Mate, Older Americans, Employee Health and Fitness, and Motorcycle Safety Month. Special days to observe are Mother’s, Good Neighbor and Memorial.

The Walk In Art Center invites you to join them for their First Saturday Open House from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Pawcasso Art by Dogs will also be held from 10 a.m. to noon that day. Bring your leashed dog for a morning of canine creativity. Artists and volunteers will be on hand during the second annual event to help you and your pup paint and create a doggone good masterpiece. Dogs must be leashed and with their owners at all times. Cost is $5 for an 8-inch-by-10-inch canvas and supplies. Donation of a bag of dog food for a local SPCA is encouraged. Proceeds benefit the SPCA. Register by calling 570-732-3728.

Did you know that blood is needed every two seconds? You can help fill the need. There will be a blood drive at the Auburn Ambulance Building on Thursday. Everyone who is in general good health who weighs at least 110 pounds is encouraged to give.

National Day of Prayer will be observed on Thursday at the Courthouse Commons. You’re invited to join in an hour of celebration at noon. Call 570-366-1300 or 570-544-9630 for information.

Create Your Own Garden Picks will be held at the Tamaqua Community Arts Center from 6 to 8:30 p.m. May 9. Hand paint four or five ceramic picks to customize your garden. All materials and instruction are included in the $35 class fee. Register at 570-668-1192.

The Schuylkill County Visitors Bureau celebrates National Travel and Tourism Week by presenting a Tourism Expo on Saturday at Fairlane Village mall. Now’s the time to check out what will be happening in Schuylkill County this summer.

Mark your calendars for the annual Kielbasi Festival and Kielbasi Making Contest on May 21 in downtown Shenandoah. The area will come alive with the aromas of ethnic foods that will satisfy even the pickiest eater in your family. There will also be Polish pottery, Matrushka dolls, straw ornaments and other Eastern European crafts. A live band and kids’ games and crafts will also be featured.

Transportation drivers

Times: Flexible, choose your availability.

Responsibility: Provide transport to consumers over the age of 60 for a variety of errands. Being able to go to medical appointments, grocery shopping, and other tasks are vital to maintaining independence. Volunteer drivers not only provide a means of getting there, but also provide companionship. Choose your assignment and use your own automobile with the option for mileage reimbursement.

Skills: For volunteers age 55 and above.
