SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — A drug bust Saturday in the borough netted 1,200 bags of heroin and almost $1,400 in cash.

The incident that began with a traffic stop about 6 p.m. resulted in two Reading men being arrested and charges pending against a third man.

Elvin Rosario, 22, of 535 Spruce St., was charged with felony possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance and a misdemeanor offense of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.

He is also charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, reckless driving and unlawful activities as well as numerous Vehicle Code violations.

A passenger in the Infiniti that Rosario was driving — Rolando Rodriguez, 24, of 1542 Moss St. — will be charged with conspiracy for the drug offenses, Schuylkill Haven police Patrolman Cody Mullins said.

Mullins said the incident began when he and Patrolman David George saw a vehicle driven by a man later identified as Rosario with tinted windows and tried to conduct a traffic stop.

Rosario fled for a short distance onto North Garfield Avenue before he pulled over and fled on foot.

Mullins said that Rosario was taken into custody a short distance away after he jumped over a wall and injured his leg, possibly suffering a fractured femur.

After the two were in custody, Mullins said, police found 24 bricks of heroin totaling 1,200 bags with an estimated value of $12,000 as well as the $1,400 in cash.

In addition to Rosario and Rodriguez, Mullins said a third person was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant from Lebanon County and is expected to be charged in connection with Saturday’s traffic stop and drug bust.

After being taken into custody, Mullins said Rosario was taken to a Pottsville hospital and then transferred to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest for treatment of his injuries.

Rodriguez was expected to be arraigned later Saturday night by on-call Magisterial District Judge Stephen J. Bayer, Tamaqua.

Mullins said the investigation into the drug trafficking arrest is continuing.
