n Ashland: The Ashland Area Rotary Club during a recent meeting welcomed Carol Bowen, director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Schuylkill County. Bowen said RSVP is part of Senior Corps, a component of the Corporation for National and Community Service and is under the local sponsorship of the Schuylkill County Office of Senior Services. Bowen, according to the Rotary bulletin, said many of the paths of service that RSVP provides, includes transportation to medical appointments, telephone contact with home-bound seniors, adult literacy tutoring, crocheting clothing, preparation of official papers and stream water monitoring. There is a wide variety of volunteering opportunities and RSVP works with more than 40 county nonprofits to staff needed positions, Bowen said. Currently, there are about 350 volunteers serving the program, but more are needed. Bowen said volunteering results in great satisfaction and enhancement of life via helping others. The RSVP volunteers must be people 55 and older who want to make a difference in the lives of others in the county. To sign up or obtain additional information, call Bowen at 570-622-3103.
