n Minersville: The St. Nicholas Holy Name Society will have an all-you-can-eat hot breakfast buffet from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 28 at St. Nicholas Hall, Route 901, Primrose. The cost is $9 for adults and $5 for children. All are welcome. For more information, call 570-544-4581.

n Pine Grove: Patrick M. “Porcupine Pat” McKinney, environmental education coordinator with the Schuylkill Conservation District, will lead a “crisp walk outdoors” from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 27 at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park. Participants will check for winter weeds, winter birds and enjoy winter scenery, according to a press release. People will meet at the Waterfall Road parking lot at the park. The program is free and open to the public and is suitable for all ages. From 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 28, people will have the opportunity to learn about fly ties at the park via a program by Schuylkill County Trout Unlimited in the park clubhouse. There also will be a fly casting demonstration. The class is free but registration is required by calling 717-979-0235 for a spot in the class. The program, according to a release, is suitable for teens and adults.

n Pottsville: The Schuylkill County Democratic Committee, during its Feb. 14 county convention of the elected committee persons, unanimously endorsed the following candidates for offices, according to a committee press release: Congressman, Matt Cartwright (incumbent); auditor general, Eugene DePasquale (incumbent); 123rd Legislative District, Neil Goodman (incumbent); 124th Legislative District, James Smith; 125th Legislative District, Ryan Collins. The committee voted to have open primaries for the following offices: President, senator, attorney general and treasurer. Hugh Reiley, chairman, said in the release the committee is “proud to again present Congressman Cartwright and Representative Goodman to the voters of Schuylkill County. They are both well-known and have served the citizens with distinction. Their records clearly establish that they should be continued in office.”

n Pottsville: The Pottsville Rotary Club during a recent meeting recognized the following students of the month: Lauren Womer and Joshua Donley from Minersville Area, Katrina Whalen and Christopher Pekarik of Pottsville Area and Lauren Moyer and Jacob Evans from Nativity BVM high schools. The students told the Rotarians about their school and community activities and plans for the future.

n Ringtown: An American Red Cross blood drive is slated for 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ringtown Valley Fire & Rescue Company Station 2, Main Street. People 17 and older (16 with parental consent), weighing at least 110 pounds and in general good health are urged to donate blood. n Ringtown: The Ringtown Area Library is accepting donations of good-condition, gently-used books, DVD movies, jigsaw puzzles, board games and select magazines for the Friends of the Library’s annual used book sale to be held April 2 and 3 at the Schuylkill Mall, Frackville. Magazines are limited to women’s interest, hobby, outdoors, cooking, gardening and similar fare — no National Geographic magazines and no magazines more than three years old. Also, no text books or encyclopedias will be accepted. Donations can be dropped off at the library, 132 W. Main St., during library hours: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, noon to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

n Shenandoah: A basket auction to benefit the Shenandoah sesquicentennial celebration will be held March 6 in Divine Mercy Roman Catholic Parish’s St. Stephen Hall, Main and Oak streets. Doors will open at noon and the auction will begin at 2 p.m. There will be a shop-and-drop from 1 to 4 p.m. March 5. The hall is accessible to the handicapped. Tickets are $10 each and include first 25 tickets and light refreshments. Food and baked goods will also be on sale. All are welcome.
