n Pine Grove: The Pinegrove Historical Society will host a free program by Steve Yoder called “The History and Legacy of the Bonawitz Family” at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Pine Grove American Legion, 42 S. Tulpehocken St. In 1809, Yoder’s ancestor, Johannes Bonawitz, Womelsdorf, bought the property that is today home of the historical society. He was also a well-known gunmaker of the Pennsylvania long rifle. Doors will open at 6 p.m.; food will not be available.
n Pottsville: The city’s 40th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade and its 37th annual Grand Irish Party hosted by the Pottsville Ancient Order of Hibernians will be held on Saturday. The parade will go from 10 a.m. to noon. For the parade, staging will be at 12th and Market streets with the march beginning at 11 a.m. The celebration will also include an 8 a.m. Mass at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church and an AOH Grand Marshal breakfast at 9:15 a.m. at Trippin’ Billie’s. The Grand Irish Party will go from noon to 4:30 p.m. at Humane Fire Company, 200 Humane Ave. The cost for the party is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. The event will include live music, food, beverages and dancing. Advance tickets are available at Murphy’s Jewelers, Humane Fire Company, Trippin’ Billie’s or from any member of the AOH or LAOH. Disc jockeys J. n Tamaqua: Multiple Schuylkill County communities have been chosen to be featured in a documentary series titled “Skook Tales: Written by You.” The communities, according to a release from Justin Stephens, were chosen for their diversity and melding of various cultures and for their historical significance. “Those from the county enjoy calling themselves ‘Skooks’ or ‘Skookers’ and the series will include unique tales of persons and places to be shared, Stephens said in the release. Lavendar Lady FX Group, Tamaqua, will film at locations such as Girardville, Tamaqua and Shenandoah. The public is welcome to attend, have their tales filmed and be included in the series. The first event to be filmed will be March 19 at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Girardville. Lavendar Lady will set up at 1 W. Main St. inside the historical society building.
