Pedestrian struck

by SUV in city

Pottsville police are investigating a pedestrian crash that was reported at 3:06 p.m. Thursday.

Police said preliminary information showed that Douglass Huyett, 43, of Pottsville, was driving a Dodge Durango north in the 300 block of Progress Avenue and stopped for a stop sign in his direction of travel at the intersection with Laurel Boulevard and activated his left turn signal.

After coming to a complete stop, police said, Huyett proceeded into the intersection and turned left to travel west when he struck a 30-year-old Pottsville woman.

Police said the woman was crossing Laurel Boulevard in a designated crosswalk from the northwest corner to the southwest corner.

The woman was about one-third of the way across the street when she was struck, police said.

Police said the woman suffered injuries and was taken to an area hospital for treatment by Schuylkill EMS.

Police said their investigation into the crash is continuing.

Man charged for

domestic assault

A city man is free on bail after being arrested by Pottsville police after officers were called to investigate a domestic disturbance on Monday.

Police said the domestic assault was reported after a woman revealed the incident to another person who in turn contacted the department.

The investigation determined that Frank Fisher, 42, physically assaulted his 35-year-old girlfriend on Saturday while the two were inside 2100 W. Norwegian St., police said.

As a result of Fisher’s actions, police said, the woman suffered substantial pain and bruising that prompted her to seek medical attention, police said.

As a result of the incident, Fisher was charged with simple assault and harassment, arraigned Monday by Magisterial District Judge James K. Reiley, Pottsville, and released on $10,000 unsecured bail, police said.

Two charged for

underage drinking

LYKENS — Two people were charged with underage drinking by state police at Lykens after an incident about 4 a.m. Saturday at 570 N. Second St., Apt. B, in this Dauphin County community.

Police said Austin E. Kerr, 19, of Carlisle, and Devin M. McCullough, 19, of Lykens, will have to answer to the charges before Magisterial District Judge Rebecca Margerum, Elizabethville.

Police said the two men were interviewed in connection with an earlier incident and were both found to be under the influence of alcohol.

Police also said Kerr was found with a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and will be charged with Act 64 drug offenses as well.

In the earlier incident, police said, Kerr will be charged with criminal attempt to commit retail theft after he tried to steal a ham and cheese pretzel sandwich about 1:30 a.m. at Koppy’s on the Square, 1 W. Main St., Elizabethville, police said.

Police said Kerr was caught by the cashier with the sandwich in his pocket.

Two face animal cruelty charges

MINERSVILLE — Minersville police charged a man and woman with 24 counts each of cruelty to animals stemming from an incident last month.

Police said the charges against John T. Altemos, 56, of 420 Peter St., Ashland, and Brenda L. Reedy, also 56, of 311 Highland Drive, Forest Hills, Pottsville, were filed with Magisterial District Judge David A. Plachko, Port Carbon.

Police said Altemos and Reedy were charged after 24 cats were found inside a home Reedy rented at 231 Oak St., Minersville, at the time on Feb. 16.

All of the cats were taken by representatives of Schuylkill Haven Save the Strays in Mount Carmel, police said.

Police search for

paintball vandal

State police at Lykens are looking for a vandal who hit a car with a paint ball in Williamstown recently, police said Thursday.

The victim was Brenda Brown, 452 E. Market St., Williamstown, and the incident occurred between Feb. 20 and March 5, police said.
