Schuylkill County voters will hit the polls Tuesday for the primary election.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the 125 precincts throughout the county.
Republicans and Democrats will vote on who they want to represent their parties in the race for president and several state offices in the November General Election.
In the race for president, Democrats will decide between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, while Republicans vote for either businessman Donald Trump, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz or Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
Meanwhile in the state races, two Northampton County Republicans are seeking their party nomination to challenge incumbent U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-17, in the November. The district includes all of Schuylkill County and parts of Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe and Northampton counties.
Republican voters can choose either former professional race car driver Matt Connolly, 50, of Bethlehem Township, or Northampton County Councilman Glenn Geissinger, 50, of Plainfield Township.
Republicans and Democrats will also vote for delegates to represent the 17th Congressional District at their party’s national convention.
The delegate selection process is different in every state and for the two major parties. While the Democratic delegates had to commit to a presidential candidate before the primary election, Republicans did not. The presidential candidates that those wanting to become Democratic delegates support will appear alongside their name on primary ballots.
Democratic voters will select seven delegates — four men and three women. There are 13 candidates, seven men and six women.
The men and the candidates they committed to are Guy Anthony, Bernie Sanders; John Ferguson, Sanders; Ed O’Brien, Hillary Clinton; Bill Herbert, Sanders; Adrian Shanker, Sanders; Neil Makhija, Clinton, and William Courtright, Clinton.
The six women are Blandine Mballa-Fonkeu, Sanders; Grace McGregor Kramer, Clinton; Jennifer Newland, Clinton; Jessica Rothchild, Clinton; Susan M. Hall, Sanders, and Tara Stephenson, Sanders. Courtney Washo is the only one running for alternate delegate.
Republican voters will select three delegates. Their choices are Robert E. Ames, T. Lynette Villano, Ron Boltz, Mary Beth Dougherty, Charlie Kirkwood, George F. Halcovage Jr., Gloria Lee Snover, George Paul Blauer, Carolyn L. Bonkoski, Theresa Santai-Gaffney and Thomas Whitehead. Although uncommitted, the candidates previously revealed how they plan to vote if elected.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane, who is currently under felony indictment and suspended from practicing law, is not seeking re-election. Three Democrats and two Republicans are looking to replace her.
Democrats can choose John Morganelli, Northampton County district attorney; Josh Shapiro, attorney and Montgomery County commissioner, or Steve Zappala, Pittsburgh district attorney.
Republicans will choose between Joe Peters, attorney and former police officer, and John Rafferty, state senator and attorney.
Democrats have two choices to represent the party in the race for state treasurer: Albert Baker Knoll, attorney, and Joe Torsella, a former U.S. ambassador. There is only one Republican seeking the party nomination: Otto Voit, veteran and businessman.
Four Democrats are seeking the party nomination to challenge U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey in the General Election: John Fetterman, Braddock mayor; Katie McGinty, former state environmental protection secretary; Joe Sestak, former congressman, and Joe Vodvarka, spring manufacturer.
