n Gilberton: Continental Hose Company No. 3 will sponsor a bleenie and food sale beginning at 11 a.m. May 7 at the firehouse, Main Street. The cost for bleenies is 75 cents each and $9 a dozen. Pierogies will be available at $1.25 for three and pizza will be $2 a slice. Call 570-874-2224.

n Heckscherville: Clover Fire Company, 8 Clover Road, will have an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday at the firehouse. The cost is $8 for adults and $3 for children.

n Mahanoy City: The Mahanoy Area Historical Society will present “John Mitchell: An American Hero” on Thursday at the Sen. James J. Rhoades Downtown Center, Main and Centre streets. Clarks Summit actor Robert Thomas Hughes will do a dramatic reading that he authored. Mitchell is the United Mine Workers president who led the charge in securing better wages and working conditions for anthracite coal miners. He visited Shenandoah during the coal strike of 1902, also known as the anthracite coal strike, which was an action by the United Mine Workers of America seeking higher wages and shorter workdays for miners as well as recognition of the union. n Mar Lin: A fashion show featuring the Special Olympics athletes of Schuylkill County is set for May 15 at the Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29, Maple Avenue campus. The event will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $5. The athletes will model outfit supplied by local consignment. Call 570-617-3681.

n Minersville: A poker run to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 7 at New Minersville Firehouse, 500 Line St. The cost is $20 for riders and $10 for passengers. The firehouse softball team is the sponsor. Kick stands up will be at 11 a.m. Call 570-640-5246.

n New Philadelphia: The Actors Guild of Schuylkill County will present Ronald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka Junior” from 7 to 9 p.m. May 13 and 14 and 2 to 4 p.m. May 15 in the Theater at Simon Kramer, 15 Alliance St. The cost is $15 for ages 13 and older, $10 for ages 4 to 12 and free for children 3 and younger. n Orwigsburg: The Congregational Free Church of Christ, 81 McKeans Ridge Road, will have a Chinese auction from 1 to 4 p.m. May 7. The cost is $5 per sheet. Doors open at 11 a.m.; drawings begin at 1 p.m. Lunch will be available and there will also be a bake sale. An advance sale will be from 6 to 8 p.m. May 5. Call 570-385-2569.

n Orwigsburg: The Orwigsburg Area Free Public Library will have a Chinese auction from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 7 at the Masonic Lodge, 1000 E. Market St. The cost is $5 per sheet. There will be a shop-and-drop from 4 to 7 p.m. May 6. There will also be a food sale, lottery ticket basket, Phillies basket, Penn State basket, handcrafted goods and items by local artists.

n Ringtown: The Old White Church Preservation Committee will sponsor the annual Ascension Day Service at 10 a.m. May 5 in the historic Old White Church, 189 Cemetery Hill Road. The speaker will be the Rev. William Worley, Pennsylvania Southeast minister for the United Church of Christ. A covered-dish luncheon will be held following the service at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 106 W. Main St. Call 570-889-3494.

n Shenandoah: The Shenandoah Valley High School Drama Club will perform “Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in the high school auditorium. Advance tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. Tickets on the days of the performances are $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens. Advance tickets are on sale in the high school lobby from 6 to 8 p.m. until Friday.

n Tower City: An American Red Cross blood drive will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Williams Valley High School, 10330 Route 209. People 17 and older (16 with parental consent), weighing at least 110 pounds and in general good health are urged to donate blood. To make an appointment, call 800-733-2767.
