Diocese warns
of phone scam
The Diocese of Allentown is warning parishes, schools, offices and staff members of a scam.
A memorandum from the Diocese by the Rev. Monsignor Gerald E. Gobitas dated Wednesday said someone called a parishioner of Divine Mercy Parish claiming to be Father Johnson, who is a Parochial Vicar at the parish. The caller then said he was in a vehicle accident in New York and was arrested. He needed $2,000, the caller stated, according to the Diocese. The money was not sent because the parishioner knew the called was not Father Johnson.
The person called from the number 403-615-7135, which is a cellphone number, and caller ID indicated it was from Alberta, Canada.
